“So even in a relationship that has been changed by a decision to join in a common purpose,” explains Perry, “people will have the same old attachments to their purposes of specialness, and they don’t want to let those go. Then they look at the war going on between themselves, and between their two purposes, and think, ‘This is a joke; we’re ridiculous, hopeless.’ That’s the period of discomfort, and people can only leave that as they slowly shift their minds over to the new goal. It seems that with Helen and Bill, that shifting never went far enough to become evident in their daily relationship.”

The Course advises against moving on to find ego-gratification when the period of discomfort becomes intense:

Now the ego counsels thus; substitute for this another relationship to which your former goal was quite appropriate. You can escape from your distress only by getting rid of your brother. You need not part entirely if you choose not to do so. But you must exclude major areas of fantasy from your brother, to save your sanity. Hear not this now! Have faith in Him Who answered you. He heard. Has He not been very explicit in His answer? You are not now wholly insane. Can you deny that He has given you a most explicit statement? Now He asks for faith a little longer, even in bewilderment. For this will go, and you will see the justification for your faith emerge, to bring you shining conviction. Abandon Him not now, nor your brother. This relationship has been reborn as holy. (CH17, V, 7)
